This next post will focus on the importance of conscious breathing. That is bringing conscious awareness to your breath (e.g. meditation, breath work, mindfulness).
Some of you will ‘blank’ when I say the words ‘meditation’ or ‘conscious breathing’ and some of you will say, der of course. For those in the middle I would really like to encourage you to find a breath practice.
Conscious breathing benefits so many aspects of our health and wellbeing (body, mind, heart and spirit). In times like these it is a major friend to our ability to stay centred, grounded, calm and make informed decisions. A conscious breath practice will support us:
– to down regulate our nervous systems,
– reduce the negative impacts of stress, worry & confusion,
– improve the capacity of our body to attend to its regular maintenance & repair needs,
– dampen overwhelm & anxiety,
– connect us with our life force,
– boost our immune function directly, &
– give us sweet virtue signaling cred (just joking…..or am I)!
There is so much more but that is a much longer post & my fingers are sore 😜
A breath practice does not need to be complicated or sophisticated. Sometimes the simple ones are the best.
My favourite beginner practice to calm, centre & rebalance the nervous system is just ‘breath watching’. Simply letting ourselves become aware of our inhale & our exhale more & more. Noticing the sensations of breathing, the texture, taste, speed, length, temperature etc.
Yes your mind will wander, you will get distracted. It doesn’t matter. Just notice that too & then come back to awareness of the sensations of breathing in and breathing out. You can even say in your mind ‘breathing in’ on the inhale and ‘breathing out’ on the exhale with each breath.
Do 20mins, 10mins, 2mins. Whatever is right for you. The more often you can reset your awareness & draw it to your breath the greater the benefit.
If you want some support I have created a free 17min guided meditation for all those wanting to start with a little help. PM or email me.
Of course there are a million out there just search or go it alone. Whatever is your jam.
With all that is going on let’s remember we are in this together. This is a shared experience. We have each other’s backs and hearts. We will awaken to this need together but it might be a crunchy time for a bit.
Let’s spaciously connect.
P.S. There will be some online supported conscious breathing circles coming to an online space near you soon so stay tuned if you are interested.
